Notes:
Caption on verso: For more than three years Xenophon Kalamatiano, an American citizen, member of the U.S. Counsular Service, has been held prisoner by the bolshevists in Moscow, Russia. Kalamatiano is a native of Bloomington, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Chicago and in 1912 went to Russia as General Manager for Russia of the J.I. Case Company. In 1914 he became attached to the American Embassy at Moscow and while in that service was arrested and thrown into prison. He was charged with espionage. His wife has made appeals to the Department of State and every other known agency to secure his release without results. The last word the wife received was in December when Washington D. Vanderlip, the southern California financier, upon returning from the interior of Russia, wired her that he had visited and talked to her husband. He said he was well, sound in mind and body, but the sentence of death still hangs over his head.
