Title: Ach! vot a discord!
Creator(s): Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist
Date Created/Published: [1918]
Summary: World War I cartoon shows Kaiser William and Admiral Henning von Holtzendorff singing from two different sheets of music. The Kaiser's sheet is labeled 'Our Trusty Subs Are Holding Off the Yanks'; the Admiral's is labeled 'They Come Too Fast, We Cannot Sink Them Yet.' A German man holds his hands over his ears saying, 'Ach! Vot a Discord!' The Kaiser considered it his duty to portray an optimistic view of German progress in the war, but in July 1918, von Holtzendorff, chief of the German naval staff, admitted that German U-boats were unable to block the transport of American troops to Europe. By the fall of 1918, there were more than two million American soldiers in Europe.
