Title: Fields and farm buildings at Hartman Farms, near Columbus, Ohio
Creator(s): Shahn, Ben, 1898-1969, photographer
Date Created/Published: 1938 Summer.
Notes:
General caption for this series of images: Hartman Farms, 'the farm that Peruna built.' Peruna was a patent medicine which put Columbus on the map for a time. It was advertised as a blood tonic, as it was highly alcoholic. It sold during Prohibition, built the Hartman Building in Columbus, and the Peruna Building, a beautiful building with fine white marble trimmings. Peruna was exposed, the manufacturers prosecuted, and the Hartman Farms are now run by banks. Note houses in which the farmworkers live.
