Once known simply as 'The Palace,' which was built to be 'earthquake-proof' in 1875. It survived the tremors of the Great San Francisco earthquake, only to burn to the ground when firefighters pumped its water reserves dry to fight fires nearby. It was lavishly rebuilt.
