Title: The doughboys make good
Creator(s): Penfield, Edward, 1866-1925, artist
Date Created/Published: [1918?]
Summary: Exhibit caption: This cover design for Collier's Magazine highlights the bravery and skill of the 'dough boys' or infantrymen of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Against a colorfully streaked sky, Edward Penfield boldly outlines two soldiers, one aiming a machine gun, the other surveying the field of battle. By the time Penfield created this cover, U.S. forces had halted the German advance on Paris and other actions of the Allies had checked the German offensives by late June. Inspired by the strongly outlined forms, flat areas of color, and simple compositions of Japanese prints and French poster artists, Penfield perfected his own forceful, signature style that he employed in numerous commercial projects including posters and cover art. His art visibly influenced many illustrators of his time.
