Title: They always did work faster in Michigan
Creator(s): Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist
Date Created/Published: 1922 [ie 1921 Aug. 24]
Summary: Cartoon shows Russian Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin choking a bear labeled 'Russia.' Behind him Leon Trotsky, another prominent Bolshevik leader, holds a paper reading 'Aug. 23, Former Governor Chase Osborn of Michigan Chokes a Bear to Death.' Trotsky remarks 'They always did work faster in Michigan.' A news item reported that former governor Chase, a well-known big game hunter, killed the bear after a 20 minute fight. The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, seized power in Russia in 1917, and by 1921, the country was ravaged by famine and disease. The cartoonist suggests that it took somewhat longer for Lenin and his government to wreak disaster on Russia.
