Title Translation: Posada dreams or a magnificent Christmas carol
Creator(s): Antonio Vanegas Arroyo (Firm), publisher
Related Names:
Posada, José Guadalupe, 1852-1913 , artist
Date Created/Published: Mexico City : Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1903.
Summary: The recto of this broadside shows dream-like images of people gathering around a campfire (upper right), a nativity scene with the three magi in procession (upper left), two scenes of couples dancing, and a scene of three individuals in front of the mouth of hell (lower left). On the verso there is an image of people carrying a crèche in a posada procession and a small image of a baby asleep next to it. Traditionally, a posada is a Mexican Christmas enactment of the holy family asking for lodging. This occurs in neighborhoods and a predetermined home serves as the posada (a place to stay overnight). When the procession of people reaches this home the holy family is let in (the family is represented in the form of crèche or actors). A party then proceeds with a piñata, food, and candies. The text in this broadside comprises Christmas carols, Catholic litanies in Latin, the Posada song asking for lodging, and Christmas songs which use the Mexican national anthem as the tune.
