Summary: Drawing is a French street scene showing a dejected well-dressed man in a high silk hat and cape, standing in a crowd in front of a lottery office. Glackens was an American painter and member of the realistic group of artists known as the Ashcan School. In his early career he illustrated magazines and books. This drawing is an illustration for Frére Jacques by Charles Paul de Kock, a prolific novelist of middle-class Parisian life during the first half of the 19th century.
