Title: Uncle Sam'll be more inclined to help if you'll change tools
Creator(s): Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist
Date Created/Published: 1922 [i.e. 1925 May 5]
Summary: Cartoon shows United States Ambassador to Great Britain Alanson B. Houghton admonishing a battered soldier (labeled Europe) who has a bandaged leg and head and a patch over one eye. The soldier is armed with both a sword and a gun and sits on a box of ammunition. At his feet lie several farm implements. Houghton says, 'Uncle Sam'll be more inclined to help if you'll change tools.' In May 1925, Houghton warned the governments of Europe that if they did not give up their rivalries and find a peaceful way to cooperate, the United States might cut off its contributions to postwar reconstruction.
