Title: Hunting the hidden treasure
Creator(s): Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist
Date Created/Published: 1920.
Summary: Cartoon shows Uncle Sam, as a policeman, demanding of the Democratic donkey, dressed as a farmer, 'Where's that McAdoo fund?' The donkey responds, 'Search me!' Meanwhile the cartoonist's small signature bear reads a book titled 'Exploits of Captain Kidd.' In 1920, it was rumored that wealthy industrialists had raised a five to ten million dollar fund to support the candidacy of William Gibbs McAdoo for president. A Senate committee investigated, calling witnesses such as Bernard Baruch and high-level Democratic politicians, but no evidence supporting the existence of the fund was found.
